Ukraine Imposes Martial Law After Russia Declares War

Ukraine -Ukraine has announced the imposition of martial law after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war. The law would impose stricter restrictions across the country. The restrictions could include bans on meetings, movements and political parties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Ukrainians to stay home and not to panic. He said that Russia has targeted Ukraine’s military infrastructure. He said that a special military operation in the Donbas region has been announced by Russia. He also said that Russia is conducting strikes on its military infrastructure and border guards. Earlier, Ukraine imposed a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days.

Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine on Thursday. However, he said that Russia does not plan to occupy Ukraine. He said that he announced the military operation in Ukraine to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine.

After Putin declared war on Ukraine, large explosions were heard in Kyiv and Kharkiv regions. Reportedly, Putin said, “We decided to launch a special military action aimed at demilitarisation of Ukraine.” Putin also said that clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces are unavoidable. He called on Ukrainian service members to “lay down their arms and go home”.

Putin accused the United States (US) and its allies of ignoring Russia’s demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and offer Russia security guarantees.

Joe Biden warned that the military operation in Ukraine will cause a “catastrophic loss of life.” He called the military operation “an unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces” on Ukraine. He also held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after explosions were heard in Kyiv.

On Tuesday, the United States government and the European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on two Russian banks, Moscow’s sovereign debt, and several other measures. Biden also announced sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
