Tehran Hoping to Restore Nuclear Talks at the Upcoming UN Summit in NYC

Tehran hopes to restore the 2015 nuclear accord with world leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Summit. The UN Assembly is scheduled to take place in New York, United States.

The world leaders held six rounds of indirect discussions between the United States and Iran in Vienna in an attempt to work out the atomic agreement, which was deserted in 2018 by former US President Donald Trump

In April, JCPOA signatories started talks in Vienna to bring Tehran and Washington back onto the negotiating table. However, it slowed down after Raisi won the elections.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian will board the plane for New York on Monday for the UN General Assembly. On Sunday, in a press conference, he told journalists in Tehran that he would be meeting
nuclear deal member state leaders at the UN Summit.

European Union international strategy chief Josep Borrell told correspondents on Monday, “A few years the nuclear meeting occurs, and in some years it doesn’t. It’s not on the UN agenda.”

He added that the Ministers from China, Britain, France, Russia, and Germany wouldn’t meet with Iran at the United Nations this week to discuss the return of the 2015 atomic agreement.

However, the negotiators anticipated a ministerial gathering of parties to the 2015 atomic agreement on Wednesday alongside world pioneers’ yearly UN Summit

Endorsed in 2015 by Iran and a few world leaders, including the United States, the JCPOA put critical limitations on Iran’s atomic program in return for easing sanctions.

Former US President Donald Trump had pulled out of the agreement in 2018, asserting it failed to abridge Iran’s missile program and local influence. Iran started overlooking restrictions on its atomic program because of which they are suffering heavy US sanctions.

The destiny of the return of the Iran atomic agreement stays uncertain. Current US president Joe Biden stated that he would rejoin the deal if Iran got back to compliance. He added that he desires to negotiate a broader deal that addresses other activities of Iran, for example, its missile program.

However, since Raisi became president in June 2021, he wishes Washington to get back to the original agreement only after the US lifts sanctions.
