South Korean drama ‘Squid Game’ now a non-lethal reality show on Netflix with $4.56m in prize

A reality television show that is inspired by Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game” is coming on the streaming platform, but as compared to the contestants in the series it will have far less dire consequences for contestants. In the South Korea produced drama, players’ lives were at stake as they competed for the prize money.

But with “Squid Game: The Challenge,” the “worst fate is going home empty-handed,” underlined Netflix on Tuesday as it announced the reality show highlighting that no participant’s life will be in danger. The prize money has been set at $4.56 million.

“Squid Game: The Challenge”

The TV reality show that has been named “Squid Game: The Challenge” will be a 10 episode long competition show which will be including 456 players rivaling for a “life-changing reward of $4.56 million,” Netflix said.

“For this round, the Front Man is in search of English-language speakers from any part of the world,” the release said, making a reference to the overseer of the drama’s deadly game. “As [players] compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them,” it added.

Participants requirements

The game show will be filmed in the United Kingdom and has started recruiting contestants for the show online. Release date of the show hasn’t been announced yet.

The participants would need to be at least 21 years of age. Furthermore, they must speak English and be available for period of up to 4 weeks for filming that will be in early part of 2023.

Director, writer and executive producer of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a statement on Monday, “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”
