Poland promises support to Ukraine, calls for unity against Russia

On Friday, Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki urged European leaders to resort to a united and uncompromising stance towards Russia.

His statement comes amid global concerns that Moscow could be setting up an invasion of Ukraine.

“With Russian threats, European solidarity and unity is key for Ukraine. Moscow must know that it has to face a united front without exceptions. We support Ukraine in its pro-Western aspirations,” Morawiecki said.

Western states fear Russia is planning an assault on Ukraine after bringing forces into the ex-Soviet republic to annex the Crimea peninsula. Moscow, however, denies prepping for an attack. But, it says it could adhere to military action if its security demands go unmet.

Poland’s president Andrzej Duda met his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Duda said Kyiv could count on Polish support in case of a Russian attack.

It is pertinent to state that Warsaw has not announced the exact details of the support it intends to provide to Ukraine.

“Poland supports Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine and rejects the concept of layers of influence,” Duda wrote on Twitter.

His foreign affairs advisor Jakub Kumoch said a unique channel for the contact between Poland and Ukraine would be established soon, with talks between presidential representatives in the pipeline.

“The Euro-Atlantic community has to counteract any aggression, without paying heed to its scale and size,” Kumoch said.

Separately, the US has offered to initiate a summit between Biden and Putin as a desperate effort to halt the eruption of a new war in Europe.

The US Secretary of State said Washington was ready to respond to Russian demands in writing next week and assure it of the future of NATO and European security. Moscow has asked the US to address its security concerns to stop it from taking “military measures”. Blinken repeated that the US and NATO would make no compromise on the central issue of Ukraine.
