Canada introduces bill to ban Putin from entering country

On Tuesday, Canada introduced a bill in the Senate to ban Russian President Vladimir Putin and about 1,000 other members of his military and government from entering the country.

The Canadian administration continues to ratchet up sanctions after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Banning associates and key supporters of Putin’s regime, including those responsible for this unprovoked aggression, from entering our country is one of the many ways in which we’re holding Russia accountable for its crimes,” said Marco Mendicino, the Public Safety Minister.

Canada has imposed a range of sanctions against Russia and its Western allies since Russia began what it terms a “special military operation” in Ukraine in February.

It is pertinent to state that Canada has sanctioned the Russian defense sector and many entities and individuals. At the same time, Canada has also ensured sending weapons to Ukraine. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, earlier this month, during a trip to Kyiv, promised more weapons and equipment for the Ukrainian military.

“Today, I’m announcing more military assistance, drone cameras, satellite imagery, small arms, ammunition and other support, including funding for demining operations,” Trudeau had said.

Meanwhile, in response to sanctions, Moscow has banned Trudeau.

Chrystia Freeland, the Finance Minister, and almost 600 other Canadians have also been banned from entering the country.

A spokesman for the ministry said Canada could not ban entry to individuals covered by sanctions without making amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). “Once in force, these amendments to IRPA will apply to all foreign nationals subject to sanctions by Canada, and any accompanying family members,” the statement said.
