Thailand’s tourism sector can be affected by air pollution. The Doi Suthep hilltop, a Theravada Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai Province in Thailand, is a popular tourist destination. It attracts thousands of tourists every year. However, an increase in heavy air pollution has turned the skies hazy. This can affect Thailand’s tourism in the future.
According to Nikkei Asia, people are worried about air pollution in Thailand. People are wearing masks even after the COVID-19 masking mandate has been lifted. The air quality has reportedly become unhealthy, presenting higher risks of respiratory symptoms.
The air quality index value was above 200 in early- to mid-February, emerging as one of the most polluted areas in the world. Reportedly, the air quality stays poor until around April. Automobile emissions also increased air pollution in the country. Northern parts of Thailand suffer from severe air pollution. People also complained about poor visibility.

As of January 2023, around 380,000 people suffered from respiratory problems or eye irritations. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha also urged people to wear face masks. In February, air quality levels in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, deteriorated sharply. According to experts, air pollution can wreak Thailand’s plans for economic growth.
Thailand is already seeking ways to boost its tourism industry. According to a Nikkei Asia report, the government and the tourism industry in Thailand have promoted the dry season from November to February as the best time of the year to visit the country.
Lawmakers have not yet approved any legislative bills to fight air pollution. The delays in battling air pollution also affected the health of people. If this problem continues, tourists can choose instead to go to a different country with cleaner air. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, also expressed concern on the matter.
