Towards the end of last year, Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was already sentenced for a number of activities which she was allegedly part of during her tenure but on Monday, another four years have been added to her prison term for being guilty in possession of walkie-talkies.
On Monday, the decision to extend her existing term was announced by a Myanmar court which held the leader guilty for illegally importing and possessing walkie-talkies and violating coronavirus disease (Covid-19) restrictions.
The leader was previously blamed for being ignorant towards public life during the outbreak of the pandemic by breaking protocols for promotional rallies.
Other than that, she was also convicted for two other charges for incitement and breaching Covid-19 rules for which she was sentenced to four years of prison. The punishment was reduced by half and the 76-year-old leader was later on allowed to serve the sentence while under house arrest in the capital city of Naypyidaw.
The soldiers reportedly raided Suu Kyi’s residence on the day of the military coup on February 1, 2021 and found that she possessed a lot of such equipment including walkie-talkies.
All this happened amid the government being ousted by the junta and the whole country was witnessing a wide range of protests. Civilians are fighting for democracy in the nation as the military has taken over administration and security forces are now resorting to mass detentions and bloody crackdowns. Till now, because of these protests, 1,400 civilians have lost their lives.
