OpenAI Reports Multiple Attempts to Use AI for Election Interference
Threat actors have targeted OpenAI to try and use their AI models for election tampering at least four times. The company states that it has successfully prevented over 20 of these attempts in the year 2023 although the world is waking up to the fact that AI is being used in political influence and spreading fake news.
AI-Powered Efforts at Meddling with Election
In 2024, OpenAI said that it had banned several ChatGPT accounts creating articles related to the US elections. The same vigilance continued beyond American borders with similar interventions in Rwanda where accounts were banned for generating election content meant for social media platforms including X, formerly Twitter. Still, OpenAI wants to stress that none of the generated content received meaningful virality or was able to maintain an audience.
These incidents only go to show that the nature of election interference is shifting, and AI tools are now favorite tools for use by those with ill intentions. These threats are dangerous as they seek to fuel political instability, therefore, OpenAI’s approach to identifying and trying to minimize these threats shows that it is an organization that seeks to avoid the misuse of its technology especially in matters relating to democratic processes.
Global Security Concerns
The US Department of Homeland Security has recently upped its concern over foreign interference in the elections scheduled for November 5. Specifically, Russia, Iran, and China have been flagged as possible threats, and the possibility of these nations using AI technology to spread fake or inflammatory news. This new revelation comes at the right time when OpenAI has established itself as a serious tech player after its recent $6.6bn fundraising exercise.
With ChatGPT currently boasting 250 million weekly active users since it was launched in November this year, the platform’s impact and risk for misuse are directly proportional to its increasing user base. Currently, OpenAI’s issue is how to make the wonderful AI tools available to everyone but at the same time control the misuse of the same especially in areas such as elections.
