Southwest Airlines to Charge for Checked Bags

Southwest Airlines is making big changes. Now, this airline will charge a fee for checking bags. For decades Southwest let passengers check up to two bags for free. Now only those in the top tiers of its Rapid Rewards program passengers with business class tickets, or holders of the airline’s credit card can check bags without a fee.

The new policy will start with flights booked on May 28, 2025. Southwest has not shared the fee details yet. CEO Bob Jordan said the change will help the airline meet current and future customer needs. He said that this is for profitability for the company and its shareholders.

According to the recent reports Southwest has faced tough times recently and cut 1,750 jobs—15% of its corporate workforce—in its first major layoffs in 53 years. These job cuts are part of a plan to make the company leaner and more agile. While free checked bags were once the airline’s signature offer, competitors have always charged for luggage.

Dorothy Severson a passenger said, “I would rather have the free checked bags, that’s for sure.”

Southwest is also changing its boarding process. The airline is moving from its long-used open boarding system to assigned seating next year. These changes mark a new era for Southwest Airlines as it adapts to a competitive market.
