Mohammed bin Rashid and WFP collab to send 5.4 million meals to Rohingya refugees

Vice President of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has always extended his support to underprivileged people across the world. From Bread For All and 1 Million Meals to the 1 Billion Meals, he has always made sure people never sleep on an empty stomach no matter what condition they are in.

In recent news, 5.4 million meals were distributed in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh, as part of the ‘1 Billion Meals’ campaign. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) had a successful collaboration with the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP).

The campaign, launched last year, is the largest of its kind in the region, helping scores of poor and undernourished people in 50 countries across four continents.

Although it’s still unclear when the distribution work began, a number of individuals and families in the Cox’s Bazar camps in south-east Bangladesh benefitted from the campaign. Food assistance was directly transferred to the refugees in the form of instantly redeemable smart vouchers. Using electronic codes sent to their devices, recipients were able to buy the food they need from WFP-certified shops and supermarkets.

Cox’s Bazar is considered the largest refugee settlement in the world, hosting nearly 1.2 million people sheltered in 34 overcrowded camps operated by local as well as international NGOs. Numerous Rohingya fled Myanmar years back, in 2017, to dodge persecution and ethnic cleansing at the hands of the military.

The Emirates has never saved its assistance for a specific region. Last year as well and this year too, the country was lauded for its aid efforts to flood victims in Pakistan and survivors of recent earthquakes in Turkey, respectively.
