Why Are Americans Worried About Gas Prices Ahead of the 2026 Midterm Elections?
You don’t need an economics degree to know something is off. You pull up to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder how a simple fill-up got this expensive. Millions of Americans are asking the same question with Election Day just weeks away.
How High Are Gas Prices Right Now?
AAA reports the national average for regular gasoline was $4.41 on October 1, and September set an all-time record for the month at $4.33, well above the old record of $3.83 from 2023. A year ago, drivers were paying about $3.16. That is more than a dollar extra per gallon. For a family with two cars, it adds up fast.
What Sent Prices Soaring?
The short answer is the war with Iran. Prices surged after the U.S. attack in February, as the conflict disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. That narrow waterway carries a huge share of the world’s oil, so trouble there shows up at American gas stations.
Crude has eased a bit lately, back near $90 a barrel, but pump prices are slow to follow it down.
Why Voters Are Angry
This isn’t only a political talking point. It’s a kitchen-table problem. A Fox poll found 61% of voters call gas prices a major problem for their household, up from 48% two years ago. A CBS News/YouGov survey found 23% call the prices a financial hardship, and another 30% call them difficult. Blame is landing on the White House. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in April found 77% of registered voters believe President Trump bears at least a fair amount of responsibility for the spike. Trump has described higher prices as an “inexpensive price to pay” for the war. That message hasn’t gone over well with frustrated drivers.
What It Means for the Midterm Elections
Republicans are defending a narrow majority, and they know the risk. One GOP strategist noted that gas prices matter because voters see them in real time. The trouble for the party is that a Politico poll found many Republicans are weighing a vote for another party over fuel costs. Democrats see an opening on affordability.
Still, history offers a small cushion. Prices often slip in the fall as demand drops. Whether that happens in time to calm voters is anyone’s guess.
