Canada Cuts Down on International Student Permits
The latest development that Canada has put in place is new measures that will help to limit the number of international students coming to the country. This move will influence many Indian students who have Canada as their first preference to study abroad.
Key Changes:
1. Fewer Study Permits: Canada is expected to issue 35 percent fewer study visas this year. They said they will reduce it by another 10% next year.
2. Work Permit Limits: Some students’ spouses may no longer be able to find employment in Canada or any other country.
3. Targeting Bad Actors: The government wants to prevent those who exploit students’ vulnerabilities.
Why Is Canada Doing This?
1. Too Many Temporary Residents: This has been evidenced by the fact that the number of temporary residents such as students and workers has increased by about two folds within the last two years.
2. Housing and Cost Issues: Some have accused immigrants of making houses expensive and living expensive too.
3. Political Pressure: Before the next election, Trudeau’s government is attempting to tackle these issues.
Impact on Indian Students:
Canadian education is very popular among the Indian students. There are around 4.27 lakh Indians studying there. The statistics show that there was 260% increase of Indian students studying in Canada between 2013 and 2022. India has now become the place for more than one-third of the international students who come to Canada. But these new regulations may cause the aspiring Indian students to look at other countries for their studies.
Canada has the plan to reduce the number of temporary residents in the country. Temporary residents are 6 % of the total population. Total 8 percent population of total Canada. As claimed by the government, it should be reduced to 5 percent. Canada gave out approximately 500 000 visas for students alone in 2023. But by 2025, it is expected to disburse around 437000, which is a clear sign that it wants to cut down international students in Canada.
They show that Canada aims at the realization of integration of the immigration policy. But they still require international students, they used it more prudently and chose the amount of international students they would wish to admit. Therefore, these new rules are pertinent to be considered by all Indian students who are going to further their education in other countries.
