Ukraine Strikes Back: Biggest Raid on Russia Since World War 2
The war is between Ukraine and Russia, which are conducting the war near their common border. According to either of them, they are very successful in their undertaking, although it remains very hard to determine who is telling the truth. Ukraine claims to have taken so much land in Russia, approximately 1,150 square kilometers. That’s a big area, such as a large city. They are saying they have taken a town called Sudzha really close to the border.
Ukraine’s Armed Forces’ head, Oleksandr Syrsky, on the other hand, claims they are in Russian control of 82 settlements, towns, and villages. Ukraine’s President, Zelensky, said they have “freed” Sudzha.
Why Ukraine is Attacking
Ukraine began doing so on August 6. More than two years before this, Russia has been attacking Ukraine. Ukraine claims that they are retaliating against any attack from Russia to defend itself. Some experts think that Ukraine is doing this to take some pressure off their eastern areas where Russia has been attacking a lot.
Russia’s response
The Russians say they have begun to push back. The Russians reportedly retook a village known as Krupets. Russia is also sending in more soldiers to areas near the fighting to counter Ukraine.
Suffering
Sadly, people are getting injured or forced to flee their homes due to the fighting on both sides.
People in Ukraine are in a sad mood because some of their soldiers have died. They held funerals for six such soldiers who lost their lives in the fighting in Sumy City.
At the other end, it’s not safe for so many people in Russia; hence, they had to leave their homes. About 120,000 people have evacuated, and some are receiving assistance from the Red Cross by providing them with food and clothes.
Russia claims at least 12 of its civilians – not military personnel – have been killed, and 121 wounded. But they haven’t updated those numbers since Monday, August 12.

What This Means
It’s a big deal because it’s the largest attack on Russian land since World War II, which was a very long time ago. Ukraine and Russia themselves are saying different things about what is going on, so you can’t really know. But we do know that many people are being affected by this fighting.
