Strait of Hormuz Shipping Crisis in 2026: Will U.S. Gas Prices and Grocery Bills Rise Again?
You probably felt it at the pump before you read a single headline. Fill-ups cost more, and the grocery receipt doesn’t feel friendly either. Both trace back to a narrow stretch of water on the other side of the world.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters
The strait is a shipping lane between Iran and Oman. Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply moves through it. Before the war, more than 130 ships crossed on a typical day.
How the Shipping Crisis Unfolded
The U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran began Feb. 28, and oil shipments through the strait were halted. Traffic has been shaky since. One day brought just eight crossings, the lowest in three weeks.
As of late October, there’s no clear exit. Iran is still blocking the strait, the U.S. maintains its naval blockade, and negotiations are stalled.
Latest Update: Where Gas Prices Stand
AAA put the national average at $4.27 on Oct. 22, with crude oil nearing $100 a barrel. Before the war, a gallon cost just under $3. The small recent dip is mostly seasonal. Cheaper winter-blend gasoline is helping, but this October is still poised to be the most expensive on record.
Will Grocery Bills Rise Again?
Here’s the honest answer: the full hit may still be coming. Grocery prices actually slipped 0.1% in September, though overall inflation hit 3.7%. That calm may not last. Diesel, which moves almost everything you buy, is up 66% since the war began. Farms are feeling it too. Some farmers report fertilizer costs up 30% to 40%. S&P Global expects major food products to see bigger price hikes into next year, once crops grown with pricier fertilizer reach stores.
What Experts Say
Timing is the catch. Bloomberg Economics estimates higher fertilizer costs could take as long as a year to show up in inflation data. Even a peace deal wouldn’t fix things overnight. Analysts say it would take months for oil, gasoline and diesel supplies to recover.
