Oil Prices Surge Near $110 as Brent Crude and Hormuz Risks Rattle Global Energy Markets
Fuel costs are back in the headlines. Oil prices have climbed above $110 a barrel, the highest level in about five months, after new attacks on tankers and Saudi energy sites. The jump has pushed global energy markets into another round of nervous trading while the US and Iran conflict keeps disrupting shipping lanes in the Gulf. Brent crude, the benchmark used to price most of the world’s oil, closed at $109.55 on Monday. Behind that number sits a simple fear: if tankers cannot move safely, supply tightens, and every buyer, from airlines to small shops, ends up paying more.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Keeps Moving the Market
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow channel that normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas. UK officials have reported at least nine attacks in the waterway so far in October. Even when ships keep sailing, insurance costs rise and some owners wait for calmer days. Houthi militants have also claimed strikes on Saudi sites at Yanbu and Shaybah, and a tanker exploded after hitting a mine. Traders respond by adding a risk premium, which is simply extra money paid because buyers fear shortages. The US Energy Information Administration has said it does not expect Middle East production to return close to pre-conflict levels until early 2027, so relief may be slow.
What Higher Prices Mean for Everyday Life
Crude is only the first step. Refineries are running near full capacity, so petrol and diesel prices rise faster than many people expect. Diesel matters most because it moves food, farm equipment and everyday goods. Countries that import most of their fuel feel the strain through weaker currencies and bigger bills, and Pakistan has already reported slower industrial growth linked to the crisis. Households and small businesses should expect bumpy months ahead and keep some room in fuel and transport budgets. Some analysts see $113 as the next upside level and $104 as the downside if tensions ease, while Russian supply and the US Federal Reserve meeting on 27 and 28 October could also move the market.
