Saudi Airports Hit by Houthi Attacks: Could Rising Middle East Tensions Threaten Global Oil Supplies?
A single drone can shut down an airport. Now picture that happening in a world already short on oil, and a small border town in Saudi Arabia suddenly matters to your fuel bill.
What Just Happened
Saudi aviation authorities say the airports in Jazan and Najran were targeted in two separate attacks as hostilities with the Iran-backed Houthis grew. This isn’t the first time. In August, operations at Najran were suspended after the Houthis claimed a drone strike, and a regional source said the main radar was hit.
Why This Is Bigger Than Airports
The fighting that erupted in July was the first heavy exchange between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since a 2022 truce, and it’s a spillover from the wider US-Iran war.
The Houthis are also hitting energy sites. In September, attacks near the Yemeni border wounded more than 70 people and hit areas including Jizan, home to a 400,000-barrel-a-day refinery. Days later, a key East-West pipeline was knocked out for weeks.
Why It Matters for Your Wallet
That pipeline is a workaround. The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of global daily oil and LNG shipments, and Iran has been squeezing it. Saudi Arabia says the pipeline is now moving 5.8 million barrels a day again, but Brent has still climbed back to around $101.
What Experts Are Saying
One analyst described the market as caught between improving physical supply and persistent geopolitical risk. Goldman Sachs has warned that risks to its oil outlook remain tilted to the upside.
What Comes Next
Airports aren’t oil wells, but the attacks show how far the Houthis can reach. Until the wider conflict cools, expect jumpy prices at the pump and in the cost of flying.
