China Cuts Fuel Exports in October: Could Tighter Global Diesel Supplies Push Up Costs for American Drivers?
You may never buy a drop of Chinese diesel, but it can still end up costing you at the pump and the grocery store.
What Happened
China has suspended October exports of diesel, petrol and jet fuel to rebuild its own fuel stocks. PetroChina also cancelled several gasoline and jet fuel cargoes that had been planned for the month.
Why Now?
Beijing first restricted exports in March, after the conflict involving Iran disrupted Middle Eastern crude supplies. It eased the limits in July, then moved to monthly management. Chinese fuel stocks are still below pre-war levels, so keeping fuel at home is the safer choice.
The Global Squeeze
China shipped about 1.4 million tonnes of diesel in September. That supply is now gone from the market. It also comes while attacks on Russian refineries are already straining supply. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has said the world has lost diesel exports from both the Middle East and China. Asian diesel price spreads hit a two-week high as traders priced in the missing Chinese cargoes.
What It Could Mean for U.S. Drivers
Here’s my analysis, not a forecast. Fuel is traded globally, so a shortage in one region tends to push up prices in others. American drivers usually feel diesel first through freight costs. Trucks carry nearly everything, and higher shipping costs can eventually show up on store shelves.
Gasoline prices tend to follow more slowly, if they move at all. Analysts will be watching how quickly Europe adds diesel supply, which Washington expects soon.
What to Watch
Look at whether Beijing resumes exports in November, and track weekly diesel numbers from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
