Could Russian Gas Return to Europe Through Ukraine? What the US Proposal Means
Europe has spent years and billions trying to kick its Russian gas habit. Now Washington is asking whether it should plug back in. The idea is bold, and it could reshape the war, energy bills and the balance of power across the continent.
What the US Is Actually Proposing
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner reportedly proposed that Ukraine resume transit of Russian gas, seeing restored exports to Europe as part of a peace settlement. Another report says the plan also covers restarting the Nord Stream pipeline as an incentive for Moscow.
In simple terms, Russia would get its biggest former market back in exchange for ending the war.
Why Ukraine Sits at the Centre
Ukraine was once the main highway for Russian gas heading west. Kyiv halted all transit on January 1, 2025, when its contract with Gazprom expired. That has cost Ukraine about a billion dollars a year in transit fees. So reopening the pipes would bring Kyiv money, but it would also bring back Russian leverage.
Europe Says No, At Least for Now
Brussels isn’t buying it. The European Commission has ruled out resuming Russian gas imports despite the reported US proposal. Germany is just as firm. Officials in Berlin say Russian gas stays Russian even when it passes through intermediaries. There is also a legal wall. The Economist notes that the US cannot decide this alone, and that the idea would run against EU law.
Why It Matters to Ordinary People
Gas heats homes and powers factories, so any shift shows up in bills and jobs. But the bigger stakes are political.
The plan would be an economic boon for Moscow and could strengthen populist politicians who already want to end aid to Ukraine. American producers may lose out too. Analysts warn that Russian pipeline gas could oversupply the market and undercut US efforts to sell more liquefied natural gas to Europe. Some officials are suspicious of Washington’s motives. European and Ukrainian officials told the NYT they believe the US partly wants a stake in the exports.
