A self-described vigilante murderer, dubbed “Brazil’s biggest serial killer“, died Sunday of a number of gunshot wounds in the southeastern city of Mogi das Cruzes, authorities informed Monday. The assailants fled the scene shortly after the incident.

Pedro Rodrigues Filho rose to fame in the country for claiming in dozens of high-profile interviews in the Brazilian media to have killed over 100 victims by the age of 19 because they had themselves committed crimes, mainly rape and drug dealing.

Later, he also killed his father for murdering and dismembering his own mother with a machete.

Apart from being called “Pedrinho Matador” or “Little Pedro the Killer”, the man had also been given the nickname “Brazilian Dexter” in relation to the US series about a vigilante serial killer.

68-year-old Rodrigues was sentenced to 128 years in prison over the murder of 71 people. He spent 42 years behind bars and was released on parole in 2018.

The Brazilian began his new life as a social media personality, with over 250,000 followers on the short video platform Kwai. He uploaded a series of posts commenting on high-profile cases, revealing his unusual life story, and warning youngsters against a life of crime – “murder is not something to brag about and you should not commit a crime.”

In addition to his social network service (SNS) activities, Rodrigues also published a book after his release about his tumultuous life and series of murders.

He was described by criminologist Ilana Casoy as a charismatic man who “fascinated people” and was “joyful, casual and intelligent”.
