Myanmar Shaken by Strong Earthquake, Bridge Falls into River
On Friday a powerful earthquake hit central Myanmar. After this earthquake a bridge collapsed into the Irrawaddy River. The Old Sagaing Bridge, which connected the Ava and Sagaing regions, was badly damaged. Videos on social media showed parts of the bridge falling into the water.
People in China’s Yunnan and Guangxi provinces felt the shaking. In Thailand, tremors reached Bangkok and Chiang Mai, making many people leave their buildings. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held an emergency meeting.
In Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, people said the quake was sudden and very strong. Many ran outside in fear.
A second earthquake, with a 6.4-magnitude, hit near Sagaing just minutes after the first one.
Authorities are checking for damage and injuries. Rescue teams are working to help those affected. More updates will come as the situation develops.
