Himlung Himal Avalanche: Two Bodies Found as Rescue Teams Search for Missing Climbers in Nepal 

Nobody expected the morning to end this way. A team of Nepali workers was setting up camp at the foot of one of the Himalayas’ remote giants. Then the mountain let go.

What Happened at Himlung Himal Base Camp

The avalanche hit early on Sunday, September 27, at the base camp of the 7,126-metre Himlung Himal in Manang district, western Nepal. The victims were an advanced team of Nepali workers employed by several expedition companies. They were fixing ropes, pitching tents and preparing the route ahead of the autumn climbing season. These are the people who make expeditions possible before foreign climbers arrive. The Expedition Operators Association Nepal said eight people from Himalayan Holidays Nepal and two from Imagine Nepal Treks lost contact after the avalanche buried tents at base camp. 

Latest Update: Two Bodies Recovered, Others Still Missing

Two bodies have been recovered. The Nepal National Mountain Guides Association said the two climbing guides were found dead. The number of missing people is unclear. Outlook India reports ten missing. IBTimes UK says 14 kitchen staff remain unaccounted for. Rediff puts the figure at twelve, while the BBC says at least ten. Early counts in remote mountain disasters often shift as teams compare rosters. Mingma Gyalje Sherpa said two of his kitchen staff are among the missing. 

Why the Search Is So Difficult

Weather is the biggest obstacle. Heavy snow was forecast around the peak in recent days, and helicopters and rescue teams could not reach the site because of poor conditions. The terrain adds to the problem. Manang is high, cold and far from roads. When snow keeps falling, more slides are possible, and rescuers have to weigh every step against the risk to themselves. Rescuers, pilots and fellow guides in Manang were still searching on Sunday night.

A Brutal Year for Nepal

This disaster lands on a country already stretched thin. A glacier collapse and landslide last month sent water and debris down the Trishuli River valley, killing more than 1,400 people, according to government figures. Rains, floods and blocked highways are still disrupting parts of the country. Rescue resources that are already busy with flood recovery now have to cover a second emergency.

The People Behind the Peaks

When mountaineering accidents make headlines, the focus usually falls on foreign climbers. This time the victims were Nepali guides and support staff, the workers who carry loads, cook, fix ropes and take most of the risk.

The economic stakes are real. Tourism is one of Nepal’s principal sources of foreign income. The incident also threatens the climbing tourism industry, with heavy snowfall and rain continuing to create hazardous conditions. Many mountain families depend on the autumn season. A tragedy at this stage hits households first and the industry second.

There is also a safety question. Base camps are usually seen as the safe part of an expedition. If an avalanche can reach one, operators and regulators will likely revisit where camps are placed, how early crews go up, and how weather warnings are used. Expect that debate once the search ends.
