Why European Stock Markets Are Rising After the US Midterm Elections
Investors can live with bad news. What they can’t stand is not knowing. On Wednesday, Europe’s trading floors finally got some clarity, and they reacted in a big way.
European Stock Markets Jump After Democrats Win Congress
The pan-European STOXX 600 closed 1.82% higher at 657.40, its best level since late August and its biggest one-day gain since June. Spain’s bank-heavy index did even better, climbing 3%. The mood was very different a day earlier. Ahead of the vote, the STOXX 600 slipped 0.58%.
Why Europe Cares About American Voting
Midterms rarely move markets on their own. But Washington sets tariffs, bank rules and energy policy, and all of it lands on European companies. When control of Congress shifts, investors rethink how far those policies can go.
Why Investors Are Relieved
Democrats won a landslide, which removed some of the uncertainty that had weighed on stocks in recent weeks. Traders also took comfort from President Trump accepting the results. Futures had fallen as much as 1.4% early in the day, then recovered once the outcome was clear.
Banks Take the Lead
Euro STOXX banks climbed 4.6%, their steepest one-day jump since early April. Part of the reason is political. According to Morningstar strategist Michael Field, a Democratic Congress limits the administration’s ability to impose requirements or sanctions on European banks in the US. Lower bond yields helped too.
Clean Energy Gets a Lift
Clean energy stocks, which have borne the brunt of Trump’s policies, rose. Vestas gained 2.9%, Orsted 4.6% and Nordex 4.8%. Oil stocks lagged as crude prices fell.
Company news helped as well. Novo Nordisk rose 5.6% after raising its full-year forecast, and Heidelberg Materials jumped 9.6% on strong sales.
What It Means for Everyday Savers
If your pension or index fund holds European shares, Wednesday probably helped. But don’t count on it lasting.
Toni Meadows of BRI Wealth Management noted that markets tend to rise in the very short term after midterms, though whether the move lasts is a different story. Growth looks decent and oil is cooling, which leaves room to run. Inflation and AI jitters are the real risks.
For now, relief is the story. The next test is whether earnings and the European Central Bank play along.
