Nightly Hotel Taxes
1. Barcelona. Since April 1, five-star stays carry a combined €12 per person per night, up from €7.50, and four-star hotels are €8.40.
2. Amsterdam. The tax is 12.5% of the room price, roughly €18 per person at a mid-range hotel, and VAT on short stays rose from 9% to 21% in January.
3. Paris. Rates rose January 1 by up to €4 per person per night, depending on the property category.
4. Brussels. Hotels now charge €5 a night instead of €4.
5. Edinburgh. A 5% visitor levy began July 24, the first in the UK, capped at seven nights.
6. Norway. The law took effect July 1, but no municipality has applied yet, so nothing is collected until 2027.
Entry and Activity Fees
7. Venice. Day-trippers paid €5 if they booked more than four days ahead and €10 if they booked later, across 60 peak days. The 2026 trial ended July 26, and any future rules are up to the city.
8. Tenerife’s Teide National Park. A new eco fee runs from €10 for guided hikes to €25 for solo ones.
Paperwork Fees
9. ETIAS. The €20 pre-travel authorization isn’t live. The EU dropped its late-2026 target in July, and 2027 now looks most likely. Americans still travel with just a passport.
10. UK ETA. It rose from £16 to £20 in April. Add it if London or Edinburgh is on your route.
What It Means for Your Wallet
These amounts look small until you multiply them. A couple spending five nights in a Barcelona four-star now pays about €84 in stay taxes alone (€8.40 × 2 people × 5 nights).
Most taxes are also charged per person, per night, and usually collected by the hotel directly. That means many travelers see them at check-in rather than at booking.
Do the Fees Actually Work?
Reactions are mixed. Barcelona residents have protested overtourism for years, and the tax is partly a response to that anger.
Venice offers a reality check. Its 2025 trial raised about €5.4 million but produced only modest changes in crowds. Many of these charges are as much about funding city services as about keeping visitors away.
