China's Japan Embassy Opposes NATO's Asia-Pacific Expansion
On Monday, the Chinese embassy in Japan denounced the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) for its frequent meddling in Asia-Pacific affairs. It expressed the hope that Japan would refrain from actions when interacting with NATO that would damage regional trust.
The Chinese embassy claimed in a statement on its website that NATO has recently continued to interfere in Asia-Pacific affairs, inciting conflict between groups and raising tensions among the countries in the region.
During the recently concluded Vilnius Summit, the embassy also firmly opposed NATO’s provocative language directed at China, claiming that the organization was once again attempting to inflame conflict and raise tensions.
It should be emphasised that NATO’s eastward expansion into the Asia-Pacific region violates the UN Charter’s provisions on regional agreements, the goal of fostering friendly relations between nations, and the UN Charter’s permissible limits on collective self-defense, the spokesperson said in the statement.
According to the spokesperson, the move by NATO will likely have a negative impact on regional and even global security.
The Asia-Pacific region does not require a “Asia-Pacific version of NATO,” according to the spokesperson, and Asia-Pacific nations do not support the “Asia-Pacificization of NATO.”
The embassy expressed its hope that Japan will learn from history, pursue a path of peaceful development, and refrain from actions that undermine trust among regional nations and threaten regional peace and stability. It was also said that the Chinese side was aware of the recent talks between Japan and NATO.
