China-Taiwan Tensions Explained: Could a Taiwan Strait Crisis Disrupt U.S. Technology and Chip Supplies?
Your phone, your laptop and probably your car all depend on chips made on one small island. That’s why China-Taiwan tensions matter far beyond Asia.
Why Taiwan Matters to Your Gadgets
Beijing considers self-governing Taiwan part of its territory and wants it unified with the mainland. Meanwhile, TSMC supplies major American tech names like Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm. Only TSMC, Intel and Samsung can make the most advanced chips.
What’s Happening Right Now
Chinese military pressure has become routine. In mid-September, Taiwan reported Chinese aircraft and naval vessels operating around the island, with two jets entering its air defense zones. Meanwhile, coast guard and naval operations rose 89% in early 2026 compared with late 2025.
Could the U.S. Chip Supplies Really Be Disrupted?
Yes, and TSMC’s own leadership says so. Chairman Mark Liu has warned that military force would make TSMC’s factories non-operable. He also said a war brings no winners.
America’s backup is thin. Only about 12 percent of advanced chips were made in the U.S., according to one earlier estimate. TSMC’s Arizona investment helps, but its capacity was dwarfed by Taiwan’s plants.
Why It Matters Beyond Tech
In September, the top U.S. representative in Taipei warned that the economic impact of a conflict could exceed that of World War II. For ordinary people, a Taiwan Strait crisis would likely mean pricier electronics, longer waits for cars and appliances, and shaky markets. That’s my read, not a forecast, and a conflict is far from inevitable. Still, it explains why governments keep pushing to build chips closer to home.
