Europe’s Defense Spending Is Rising: Could Americans Pay More for NATO and U.S. Defense Commitments?
For years, plenty of Americans have asked why U.S. taxpayers help defend countries wealthy enough to look after themselves. Now Europe is opening its wallet, and a new question follows: what happens to America’s bill?
What Changed
NATO allies agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. The old benchmark was 2%, and some members were still struggling to reach it.
The Latest Numbers
NATO chief Mark Rutte says Europe and Canada have already reached 4% of GDP this year, counting direct and defense-related spending, with roughly $258 billion in extra spending across 2025–2026.
Not Everyone Is Sold
Progress is uneven. Spain argues it only needs to spend 2.1% of GDP to meet core military requirements. One analysis estimates Germany would need to raise its defense burden by 164% to hit the target.
Why It Matters to You
Here’s the plain-English version. Higher European spending doesn’t automatically shrink your tax bill, because U.S. defense costs aren’t set country by country. But it does ease pressure on Washington to carry the load alone.
There’s also an economic angle. Rutte says American weapons production is being deployed in Europe, which could keep U.S. defense contractors busy.
The risks are real, though. Analysts warn that military burden-sharing, trade deficits and China policy could all strain the alliance. If Europe falls short, the old “who pays?” The fight could come right back.
What Higher NATO Spending Means for U.S. Taxpayers
Europe is paying more, but the finish line is 2035. Until then, expect the debate over fairness to stay loud.
