Von der Leyen to Announce New European Commission Team
EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen is expected to announce the new list of members for the EU’s executive arm on Tuesday. This announcement will reveal which countries’ representatives will secure strategic positions in aspects such as trade, competition, and the environment.
The European Commission is the most influential body in the European Union which consists of 27 countries. It can initiate new laws in the European Union that would be binding, prevent mergers of certain companies, and sign international trade treaties.
Each EU country will have one man/woman in the Commission as is the case with a minister in government. Certain roles are more significant than others, for instance, trade and competition roles. Others are energy and the internal market in the EU which has an impact on the business as well as consumers across the Europeans.
Europeans Will Need to Pay to Visit the UK Starting Next Year
The new Commission should begin its work before the end of the year. It will initially be faced with the major job of addressing the U. S presidential election outcome in November. If Trump wins again, it may alter how Western countries stand with Ukraine against Russia and shift EU-U. S. trade relations.
The Commission will also have to assist industries in Europe to be more competitive, particularly with China in such niches as production of electric cars.
France stirred things up a little on Monday when their selection, Stephane Sejourne was chosen after their previous choice dropped out.
Some expected job assignments include:
– Teresa Ribera of Spain may get a more important position
– Poland’s Piotr Serafin might manage the EU budget
– Lithuania; Andrius Kubilius might become the first EU defense commissioner
Von der Leyen expected countries to propose a male and female candidate to increase gender balance in the Commission. But most countries failed to do this. At the moment there are 17 men and 10 women nominated.
