Why Americans Feel Worse Off Despite 4.2% Unemployment: The Gap Between a Strong Economy and Everyday Costs
Your job is safe, probably. Your paycheck still lands every two weeks. So why does the grocery run, or the gas pump, still sting?
The Jobs Number Looks Fine. The Mood Doesn’t.
The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% in September, up from 4.1% in August. By historical standards, that’s low. But hiring has cooled. Employers added just 29,000 jobs, well below the 90,000 economists expected.
Prices Are Eating the Raise
Here’s the squeeze. Average hourly earnings are up 3.0% over the past year. Inflation held at 3.4% in August. Do the math, and pay is slipping slightly behind prices. Gasoline is the loudest culprit. Pump prices were up 27.4% from a year earlier. Gas climbed back above $4 a gallon in August.
Why It Matters
A low unemployment rate tells you whether people have jobs. It doesn’t tell you whether their money stretches. Even when inflation cools, old price hikes don’t vanish. Everyday household goods cost 33.2% more than in January 2018.
Job seekers feel it too. Hiring has averaged only about 51,000 jobs a month over the past three months, and finding work is harder than the headline rate suggests.
What Happens Next
The Federal Reserve now has to weigh slower hiring against inflation that remains well above its 2% target. Politics adds pressure. This was the last jobs report before the November 3 midterm elections. Expect the economy to stay a loud argument.
