Why $100 Oil Could Turn the Middle East Conflict Into a Global Economic and Geopolitical Crisis
Filling your tank, buying vegetables, booking a flight: almost everything gets pricier when oil does. And right now, $100 oil is hovering over the global economy again.
Why $100 Oil Matters
Oil isn’t just petrol. It moves food, powers factories and goes into plastics. When crude jumps, the cost shows up everywhere, and usually in your monthly bills.
How We Got Here
The war began on February 28, and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries roughly a fifth of global energy, was badly disrupted. By April, Brent futures were above $109, and the physical “dated Brent” benchmark topped $140.
The Latest
Prices have cooled but remain high. Brent traded near $100 a barrel on Tuesday as Middle East exports edged back toward pre-war levels. Saudi Aramco also deepened its discount to Asian buyers, and a G7 stockpile release is weighing on prices.
Still, the relief may not last. The US Energy Information Administration doesn’t expect Middle East production to return near pre-conflict levels until early 2027.
Why It Matters Beyond the Pump
Expensive oil feeds inflation, which squeezes households and leaves central banks little room to cut rates. Countries that import most of their fuel feel it first.
Politically, it hands leverage to energy producers and strains alliances. As one analyst put it, OPEC can only pump more once flows through Hormuz return to normal.
