US-Greenland Military Deal: Two New US Bases Planned Under Security Agreement With Denmark
Greenland is suddenly at the center of the Arctic security conversation. On September 22, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed a new agreement in New York that lets Washington significantly expand its military footprint on the island, a move that updates the two countries’ defense relationship dating back to 1951.
What’s actually in the deal
The US will get two brand-new defense areas: one at Narsarsuaq in the south, and another at Mestersvig on Greenland’s east coast. Notably, the deal also blocks non-NATO countries from setting up military installations or maintaining an ongoing military presence in Greenland, unless everyone involved agrees otherwise along with new restrictions on sensitive foreign investment tied to national security.
Sovereignty is still the sticking point
This deal doesn’t come out of nowhere; it follows months of tension over US interest in Greenland. And despite the bigger American military role, Greenland still belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, and its government has been clear about wanting to preserve its right to self-determination. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, framed the agreement as one that recognizes Greenlanders’ right to self-determination while also acknowledging the island’s role in Arctic security. Danish PM Mette Frederiksen echoed that, saying the deal respects both Denmark’s territorial integrity and Greenlanders’ say over their own future.
Interestingly, the agreement has no expiration date and it includes a clause saying that if Greenland ever becomes independent, it would still need to stay in NATO and take on the agreement’s rights and obligations.
What this could mean going forward
For the Arctic more broadly, this expansion could reshape the US military presence there and give NATO a stronger ability to keep tabs on an increasingly contested region.
There’s a potential upside for Greenland economically too the agreement states that US contracts for construction, maintenance, and services at these defense areas should go to Greenlandic businesses wherever that’s practical. That said, a larger foreign military presence inevitably raises questions about how it affects local communities, traditional ways of life, and Greenland’s own political ambitions down the road. The agreement does explicitly commit to respecting Greenlandic society including hunting, fishing, and cultural traditions.
