Understanding Cardiac Arrest: What Led to the Tragic Passing of Bronny James?

What could possibly have led a young athlete like Bronny James to experience cardiac arrest?

LeBron James’ oldest child suffered a cardiac arrest while participating in a USC basketball practice. The 18-year-old had just committed to play as an incoming freshman.

Bronny James’ medical emergency on Monday was handled quickly by medical personnel, who then took him to the hospital where he is now stable and out of the intensive care unit.

A sudden cardiac arrest in a young athlete is shocking and frightening, but it’s important to remember that it happens only 2,000 times in people under the age of 25 each year.

The athletic trainers nearby Bronny James knew exactly what to do because they recognized what had happened to the young star, according to cardiologist Dr. Jahandar Saleh of Dignity Health Northridge.

He explained that cardiac arrest is when the heart stops.

It happens when the heart experiences a malfunction and abruptly stops beating. There are many contributing factors.

The majority of them are genetic. One of them, according to Jahandar, is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which the heart is thicker than usual.

Hank Gathers, a player for Loyola Marymount, is thought to have collapsed following that well-known slam dunk in 1990 because of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, according to doctors. Other causes could be dehydration, a hard hit like the one that killed football player Damar Hamlin, myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle.

Was there a problem with electrolyte balance here? Low potassium, as you are aware. Low magnesium, Jahandar claimed.

Cardiac arrest is distinct from a heart attack, which happens when the heart’s blood supply is cut off.

Lives are saved by quick action. The first step is to begin CPR right away.

According to Jahandar, the brain can die if it isn’t getting enough blood.

The quicker a patient can receive defibrillator treatment, the better the results.

Many players can safely return to play depending on the cause, which is what Jahandar is hoping for Bronny James.

He said I trust that he’s in the best of hands. There’s so much that we can do in the field of cardiology.

Regarding prevention, there are some, but not all, programs that screen young athletes for any potential heart problems. Despite the fact that more and more schools now provide participation screening.

Cardiac Arrest: What Is It?

When the heart unexpectedly stops pumping, cardiac arrest happens. If this occurs, blood flow to the brain and other important organs is interrupted. Certain arrhythmias that stop the heart from pumping blood result in cardiac arrests.

A medical emergency is cardiac arrest. Outside of a hospital, 90% of people who experience a cardiac arrest pass away, frequently within minutes.

If a person suddenly loses consciousness and passes out, is not breathing, is breathing ineffectively, or is gasping for air, does not react to shouting or shaking, and does not have a pulse, they may be experiencing a cardiac arrest.
