Ukraine Receives Land Mines as War Reaches 1,000 Days
The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it will send Ukraine antipersonnel mines to slow Russia’s advances on the battlefield. This marks a second major change in U.S. military support for Ukraine in recent days.
Earlier, the U.S. allowed Ukraine to use longer-range American missiles to strike deeper into Russian territory. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin explained that the decision to provide land mines reflects the need to counter Russia’s changing tactics in the war.

The conflict, now in its 1,000th day, has mostly favored Russia. In the eastern Donetsk region, Russian forces are steadily pushing Ukraine’s troops back. Meanwhile, Russian missiles and drones, often launched from within Russia, continue to harm Ukrainian civilians.
Austin noted that Russian troops on the ground rather than those in armored vehicles are now leading their advance. Ukraine needs tech and weapons to slow them down.
This decision comes at the time when Donald Trump elected as president of America. And he promised to quickly end the war. Trump also criticized the cost of U.S. support for Ukraine.
