UAE Breaks into Top 10 Ranking for Gender Inequality Index 2024

In the pursuit of gender equality, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been at the forefront of global efforts. Established in 2015, the UAE Gender Balance Council embodies the nation’s dedication to fostering a more equitable society. With a vision to rank among the world’s top 25 countries for gender equality by 2021, the UAE embarked on a journey of empowerment and inclusivity. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reached a significant milestone in gender balance, climbing to the seventh position globally in the Gender Inequality Index 2024. This achievement, as reported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marks a remarkable rise from its 49th position in 2015 and 11th position in 2022.

Amidst the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York, the UAE’s strides in gender equality earned accolades from the United Nations Development Programme. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council, attributed this achievement to the unwavering support of the nation’s leadership and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. Recognized as a global exemplar in gender balance, the UAE prioritizes women’s representation across all spheres. Through strategic partnerships and proactive engagement in international forums like the Commission, the nation reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive societies and advancing global excellence in gender equality.

A Strategic Investment in Gender Equality

In a bold move signaling its unwavering commitment, the UAE allocated an additional $15 million to UN Women in 2023. This substantial investment spans over three years and is aimed at promoting gender equality on a global scale. By empowering women and girls worldwide and enhancing their involvement in conflict prevention and peace-building initiatives, the UAE is actively shaping a more inclusive future.

Leading the Charge on the Global Stage

The UAE’s dedication to gender equality extends beyond financial contributions. Serving on the UN Women executive board, the country plays a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives to advance gender parity. Having previously held the position of board member from 2013 to 2019, with a notable stint as president in 2017, the UAE continues to lead by example in championing women’s rights and empowerment.

Empowering Women in the Workplace

Recognizing the critical role of workplaces in fostering gender equality, the UAE has embarked on a multifaceted campaign in collaboration with UN Women. The Women’s Empowerment Principles drive, spearheaded by the UN Women UAE Liaison Office for the GCC and the General Women’s Union, aims to address gender disparities in professional settings. By promoting equal opportunities, eliminating biases, and fostering inclusive work environments, the initiative seeks to unlock the full potential of women in the workforce.

A Data-Driven Approach to Progress

To gauge progress and identify areas for improvement, the UAE relies on comprehensive data analysis. The latest Gender Inequality Index, drawing on data from 2022 or the most recent available year, serves as a valuable tool for assessing the nation’s performance in advancing gender equality. By leveraging data-driven insights, policymakers can implement targeted interventions and policies to drive meaningful change.

In essence, the UAE’s unwavering commitment to gender equality transcends borders and resonates on the global stage. Through strategic investments, proactive leadership, and collaborative initiatives, the nation is pioneering a future where gender parity is not just an aspiration but a reality.
