Tesla or BYD? The Battle of Speed, Innovation, and Affordability
Chinese electric car company BYD has won the race and left Tesla behind in annual sales ranking. This is making $107 billion in revenue in 2024. This is a 29% increase from the previous year, showing BYD’s rapid growth in the electric vehicle market.
BYD vs. Tesla: The Numbers
- BYD sold 4.27 million electric and hybrid cars in 2024.
- Tesla sold 1.79 million battery-powered cars, a 1.1% drop from the previous year.
- Tesla’s 2024 revenue was $97.7 billion, falling behind BYD.
Wang Chuanfu the CEO of BYD said the company is growing fast and leading the industry in battery and EV technology.
Why is BYD Winning?
BYD’s new charging system provides 250 miles of range in just 5 minutes, while Tesla’s Supercharger takes 15 minutes to deliver 200 miles.
BYD also offers its “God’s Eye” driver-assistance system for free, whereas Tesla charges $99 per month or a one-time fee of $8,000 for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature.
Tesla Faces Challenges
Tesla is struggling in China, where BYD holds 32% of the market. Tesla has just 6.1% and is waiting for approval to launch its FSD feature.
In Europe, Tesla’s sales dropped 40% in February, marking two straight months of decline.
So this growth is indicating that BYD is growing fast with better technology and pricing. This is a danger for Tesla, if they want to stay in market they should think about the pricing and how to grow in coming days as competitor are rasing.
