How to Celebrate Pride Month 2024: Events, History, and Participation for LGBTQ+ Rights
June is one of the special months of the year because in this month, the LGBTQ+ community is celebrated all around the world. What is LGBTQ+? It consists of various communities that are lesbian, gay,Bisexual,Transgender,Queer,Questioning, intersex, and asexual. The month of June is full of various events, festivals, and parades, which reflect the resilience, diversity, and pride of the LGBTQ+ community.
History of Pride Month
The history of Pride Month traces back to the Stonewall riots, a series of riots whose objective was the liberation of gays that began on June 28, 1969. A police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, was the reason for the beginning of these riots. Activists Sylvia Rivera, Storme DeLarverie, and Marsha P. Johnson are the ones who started these riots. After one year of stonewall riots, in several other cities, US pride marches began. These events act as a crucial element for LGBT rights. Various cities that witnessed the first Pride Week marches include Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Not only in June, but some Pride events take place in other months as well, like Tokyo’s Rainbow Pride in April and a major event in Rio de Janeiro in November. President Bill Cliffton officially named June as Lesbian and Gay Pride Month in 1999.
Participation for LGBTQ+ Rights
Pride March, also called Pride Parade, is a grand celebration of gay, bisexual, and lesbian achievements, pride, and legal rights. With time, people have started to support the LGBTQ+ community and take various steps to encourage the rights and protection of this growing community. The reason for growing support for the LGBTQ+ community is that people are now becoming more open-minded and educated. People have started to understand the importance of this community’s rights and have also understood the history and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. Not everyone can participate in LGBTQ+ rights through events, but with the help of social media, people can show their support for this community. Participation in LGBTQ+ rights means celebrating diversity.
Events
1) Asbury Park Pride Parade 2024
The Asbury Park Pride Parade, also known as Jersey Pride, will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2024. It is one of the biggest and oldest Pride Month events in New Jersey.
The event begins at noon and continues until 7 p.m. Through the heart of Asbury Park, the people in the parade can enjoy the vibrant environment. The parade ends at Bradley Park with a festival with lots of fun activities like craft booths, games, a family zone, and food vendors.
2)Pride Parade 2024, New York City
The NYC Pride March 2024 will take place on June 30 at 11 a.m. The theme for this year’s pride march is ‘Reflect.Empower.Unite’. Anyone can attend this march free of charge. The march will start at 25th Street and 5th Avenue. It is one of the best ways to show support and participate in LGTBQ+ rights.
Despite progress, LGBTQ+ rights are facing several challenges around the globe. In Iraq, heavy prison sentences are imposed on transgender and gay people, while for aggravated homosexuality, Uganda has imposed the death penalty. Over 60 countries all around the world have anti-LGBTQ+ rights.
