New Zealand Bowler O’Rourke Shines as Rain Disrupts First Test Against Sri Lanka
On the second day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle, on a rainy day, William O’Rourke took five wickets for New Zealand that helped in limiting Sri Lanka’s total score to 305 runs. In the few overs that New Zealand received, they scored 5 runs without losing any wicket before the rain forced another stop.
Early Wickets and Rain Delays
Sri Lanka started the day with 302 runs for 7 wickets down. Before they could score much though, they lost Prabath Jayasuriya when Patel bowled Ajaz while batting leg before wicket (lbw). The rain then appeared with a delay of 45 minutes. It was then O’Rourke took up the job to complete Sri Lanka’s innings. He got rid of Ramesh Mendis as well as Asitha Fernando (bowled) in that order and added only 3 runs for Sri Lanka’s last three wickets.
Impressive Bowling Performances
O’Rourke ended well with bowling figures of 5 wickets for 55 runs. The second time he had five or more wickets in an innings, Test match. The New Zealand bowlers were also just in line. Glenn Phillips captured 2 wickets for 52 runs, and Ajaz Patel managed 2 for 60 runs.
New Zealand’s Brief Batting Stint
New Zealand batsman Tom Latham and Devon Conway came out to start their side’s innings. Latham made 1 run and Conway cracked a boundary off Fernando’s bowling. However, the rain continued to pour, and after only one over, the players had to leave the field once again.
Match Summary at Lunch
New Zealand is 300 runs behind Sri Lanka from lunch on the third day. It has seen some good batting by the Sri Lankans, especially Kamindu Mendis, who has been batting well and accumulated a total of 114 runs. The other batsman Kusal Mendis has also done well in adding 50 runs and allowing Sri Lanka to arrive at a decent total.
So far, wet weather has slowed down the match. Both teams will, therefore, be keen on clearer skies so that they can get more playing time in this important Test match.
