Myanmar Earthquake: Death toll crosses 1,600 as rescue efforts continue
The death toll in the serious Myanmar and Thailand earthquake has already crossed 1,600. The not-so-deep 7.7 magnitude quake struck Myanmar early Friday afternoon and a 6.7 magnitude aftershock came minutes later.
The earthquake has destroyed buildings in both countries and injured thousands of people. Critical public infrastructure such as roads and bridges are also destroyed. The tremors also destroyed Mandalay, the second-biggest city of Myanmar.
Dozens of other people are missing at the moment. Rescue efforts are continuing in full force and the death toll is likely to increase further. Many countries are extending a helping hand in this time of crisis, including the US and neighbouring India.
Myanmar has declared a state of emergency in areas badly hit by the recent earthquake. In Bangkok, rescue personnel are putting considerable effort into bringing out those trapped under the rubble safe and sound.
