Extreme Heat Grips Western U.S.: Millions Under Weather Warnings Across Six States

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Extreme Heat Warnings across six states, California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Nevada, urging millions of residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Temperatures in some regions have soared well beyond seasonal norms, with Death Valley approaching 120°F, while nighttime temperatures remain unusually warm. States Widely Affected & Current NWS Status
- California: Inland areas like Fresno and Bakersfield, the Coachella Valley, and sections of Southern California are under heat warnings with temperatures ranging from 97°F to 112°F. Coastal valleys and mountainous regions are also impacted.
- Arizona: The Phoenix and Tucson metro areas, as well as southern desert zones, are facing highs between 102°F and 112°F. Overnight relief remains limited.
- Nevada: Las Vegas and surrounding desert valleys are experiencing some of the most extreme heat, with highs reaching 120°F in parts of Death Valley.
- Oregon: Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and the Willamette Valley are under warnings with highs between 97°F and 103°F, and warm overnight lows in the 60s and 70s.
- Washington: Seattle, Tacoma, Redmond, and nearby foothill areas are seeing mid-to-upper 90s, with very warm nights creating persistent heat stress.
- Utah: Southern regions, especially Washington County and Zion National Park, are forecasted to reach up to 109°F.
Health Risks & Safety Guidelines
The NWS warns that extreme heat significantly increases the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, remain in air-conditioned spaces, limit outdoor activities, and check on the elderly and those without access to cooling. Public cooling shelters are available in many communities, and local hotlines are offering assistance.

Extreme heat warnings are expected to remain in effect through the weekend and into early next week. Many regions are currently experiencing 15 – 25°F above normal temperatures, making this one of the most intense late-summer heatwaves recorded in recent years.
