Could Another Middle East Shipping Crisis Hit the U.S. Economy?
You don’t need to follow geopolitics to feel this one. You just need to pull into a gas station.
The Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20% of global oil supply, is effectively closed to commercial shipping as of October 6, with only four ships crossing on October 4 versus roughly 85 on a normal day. Brent crude sits around $101.
Two Chokepoints, One Headache
The Red Sea was the first trouble spot. Houthi attacks paused after the October 2025 Gaza ceasefire, but Suez Canal traffic is still well below pre-crisis levels. Many carriers are still sailing the long way around Africa.
Why It Matters at Home
Gas is the most visible hit. The national average hit $4.14 around Labor Day, and it has never been above $4 on that holiday before. Inflation has felt it too: the PCE price index climbed to 3.5% in March from 2.8% in February. Shipping costs are rising as well. Container freight rates doubled after the war began.
What the Experts Are Watching
Analysts say the problem isn’t blocked containers so much as expensive fuel. Hormuz carries only 2–3% of container volumes, but carriers have added emergency fuel surcharges of $200 to $500 per container. The real danger is a bunker fuel shortage, which could force slower sailings and push prices up further.
How Long Could the Squeeze Last?
The question isn’t whether this crisis will reach your wallet. It already has. What matters now is how long it lasts. A peace deal could pull prices down, while a prolonged closure keeps pressure on gas, groceries, and shipping.
