Big Storm Causes Flooding and Death in Vietnam
Vietnam suffered from a very strong storm, known as Typhoon Yagi that resulted in the loss of lives and property. The effects of the storm include; flooding and landslides that have mostly affected the northern regions of the country.
The typhoon has had devastating effects:
– More than 82 people have been killed
– 64 are still missing
– 752 people are injured
Many of these are as a result of floods and landslides brought by the rainy season or flash floods resulting from a broken pipe.
The Effects of Floods in the Cities & Industrial Regions
Now, the Hanoi capital is threatened by this natural disaster because water in the Red River is rising very fast. Other regions including industrial provinces such as Bac Giang and Thai Nguyen have already been severely affected by the flood. This may affect factories of the large firms such as Samsung and Apple.
Damage to Infrastructure
It has been seen that the storm affects the infrastructure to a great extent. A bridge constructed 30 years ago across the Red River has fallen and took the lives of eight people with them. Therefore, authorities have limited use of other bridges which include one of the largest bridges in Hanoi.
Evacuation Efforts
The government is doing a lot to ensure that people’s safety is guaranteed. Hanoi’s officials are using loudspeakers to tell the citizens about a possible flood and prepare for evacuation. In the outskirts of Hanoi, some villages are submerged. In Bac Giang province, more than 4,600 army men have been mobilized to assist in evacuation and aid flood-affected people.
The flooding has also severely impacted farming:
– It is flooded rice fields that cover 148,600 hectares.
– Twenty-six thousand one hundred hectares of the other crops are affected.
– About 49 thousand houses are damaged.
This typhoon is among the severe storms that have affected this region of Asia this year and affects Vietnam still. Currently, the government is so much involved in trying to contain the situation and help the affected parties.
