America’s AI Boom Is Triggering Backlash as Towns Reject Data Centers
Nobody pictures a warehouse when they type a question into a chatbot. But that’s where the answer comes from, and more Americans are saying they don’t want that warehouse in their neighbourhood. America’s AI boom is triggering backlash because these buildings swallow electricity, drink water and hum all day, while giving back very little to the people living beside them.
Why Neighbours Say No
Think about it from a resident’s side. A company arrives with big promises about jobs and tax money. Then the land gets cleared, the noise starts, and people begin to wonder why their power bill keeps climbing. A finished data center needs only a small crew to run it, so the jobs never match the pitch. Cooling can also use huge amounts of water, which hurts most in dry regions. Tax breaks for wealthy companies make it sting more.
The numbers show this isn’t a handful of angry neighbours. A Data Center Watch report found that local opposition delayed or blocked at least 75 projects, worth around $130 billion, in just the first three months of 2026. That nearly equals the whole of 2025.
What Towns Are Doing About It
People are using their votes. Residents of Independence, Missouri, removed council members who had backed a data center. In Seattle, officials froze new large builds in June after more than 98,000 emails poured in from the public.
Many councils are reaching for a moratorium, which simply means a pause on new approvals while leaders write better rules for energy, water and land. Maine’s lawmakers went further and passed a statewide pause, though the governor vetoed it. A federal bill in Congress would also pause new AI data centers while their effects are studied.
What stands out is that this isn’t a left or right issue. Bans have appeared in states that agree on almost nothing else, and one tracker counted at least 42 local bans in about two months this summer.
