2023 Nobel Prize In Medicine Recognizes mRNA Vaccines Against COVID-19
“Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times,” the Nobel Assembly said in its announcement on Monday.
Enabling The Development Of mRNA Vaccines Against COVID-19
Essentially, Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman have been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the development of mRNA vaccines.
Kariko is a professor at Sagan’s University in Hungary and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
The biochemist was senior vice president and head of RNA protein replacement at BioNTech until last year but since then has been acting as an adviser to the company.
Weissman is a Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research and Director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovations. He is a professor in vaccine research at the Perelman School.

The figure was raised by 1 million kronor this year owing to the plunging value of the Swedish currency. The laureates are invited to receive their awards on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
