Woman Accused of Killing In-Laws with Mushrooms Faces Court
Erin Patterson, who is an Australian woman, is on trial for the allegation of killing three family members by serving them a lunch containing poisonous mushrooms.

The incident happened in 2023. Erin is accused of murdering her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law, Donald Patterson, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson. She is also charged with trying to kill Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, who survived.
The lunch was held at Erin’s home in Leongatha, a small town about 135 km from Melbourne. Prosecutors say she served the victims beef Wellington that contained deadly mushrooms.
The trial began on Tuesday at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court in Morwell. Jury selection started, and opening arguments are set to begin on Wednesday.
Erin has said she is not guilty.
This case has caught attention across Australia and around the world. Media seats in the courtroom are limited and are being given out by daily ballot. Many people are expected to watch the trial from an extra room at the court.
