H5N1 Bird Flu Spreads Fast — Is the US Ready?
Health experts are asking the US to take quick steps as a bird flu virus called H5N1 spreads across the country. The virus has now been found in all 50 states, mostly on dairy farms.
Since March 2024, more than 1,000 dairy farms have had outbreaks. More than 70 people have gotten sick, and one person has died. The virus spreads quickly between animals. Experts are worried it could change and start spreading from one person to another.
Doctors and scientists say the government should keep a close watch. They suggest regular testing and maybe vaccines for animals and for people who work with them.
Dr. Sten Vermund, a health expert from the University of South Florida, said we need to act now. He said the virus is changing and can infect both animals and humans. So, it’s important to keep a close eye on it and be ready to stop it if needed.
The CDC says that the risk is still low. But they warned people who work with animals to be extra careful about the Virus.
This bird flu virus is already common in wild birds around the world. Now, it’s also affecting chickens and cows in the United States. The CDC is watching the situation and using their systems to check for new human cases.
