Why Is It So Hard To Make Gun Laws Stricter In The US?

Recently, seven people have been killed in two separate shootings at agricultural facilities in San Francisco. In a recent case of a mass shooting in the US, a gunman killed 10 people and injured 10 more in California. The United States has reported 36 mass shootings in the first 23 days of 2023.

Rampant shootings have affected the United States (US). Why is it so hard to make gun laws stricter in the US? Gun violence and laws in the US can be described as pathetic. Americans own more guns and have a higher per capita murder rate than any other developed country. Reportedly, one in three adults owns at least one weapon in the US.

According to the nonprofit organization Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 36 mass shootings in the US. The shocking statistic can create fear among Americans. A lot of debate has ensued over gun violence in the US. Experts link crime with the mental health of the accused.

Due to frequent mass killings, the majority of Americans support stricter gun laws. However, a vocal Republican minority strongly opposes stricter gun laws in the country.

As per a report from Everytown Research & Policy, the gun homicide rate in the US has increased rapidly in recent years. Reportedly, the gun suicide rate is nearly 12 times higher than that of other high-income countries.

The US experienced 648 mass shootings and 44,000 gun-related deaths in 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive website. Around 49,000 people died due to gun violence in 2021, according to AFP.

This year, mass shootings took place in California, Houston, Cleveland home, Virginia and Los Angeles. Shockingly, a six-year-old boy opened fire in an elementary school classroom in Virginia on January 7. A man shot and killed his own family of seven on January 6 because his wife filed for a divorce.
