The Promise vs. the Reality
Before kickoff, the hype was enormous. FIFA president Gianni Infantino talked up an economic windfall equal to “104 Super Bowls,” according to Forbes. Industry forecasters also expected a rebound after a rough 2025, when the U.S. was described as the only major nation in the world to see a decline in travel. The rebound never came. International visitors to the U.S. fell 3% in July compared with July 2025, according to Commerce Department data. Overseas numbers looked worse. U.S. Travel data show overseas arrivals were 7% lower in July than a year earlier and 4.7% lower year-to-date.
Where the World Cup Did Work
The tournament wasn’t a flop everywhere. HVS estimates host cities earned roughly $680 million in extra hotel room revenue during match weeks, with New York alone accounting for $339.2 million. But the gains were uneven. Early evidence suggests there was no single nationwide tourism boom. Big, famous cities did well. Smaller host markets struggled. Back in June, Kansas City’s hotel bookings were reported to be nearly 90% below expectations.

Lost neighbors. Canadians, once a reliable source of visitors, pulled back sharply. NPR reported that the biggest recent downturn has been among Canadian visitors amid the trade war.
A trend that predates the tournament. U.S. Travel’s Erik Hansen has argued the decline began under the previous administration and has continued across both. That suggests deeper causes than any single policy.
What Experts Are Saying
Alan Fyall of the University of Central Florida offered a fair take. He said the World Cup may not have taken the U.S. into new territory, but probably prevented the international numbers from being even worse. That’s the sober reading. The tournament worked as a cushion, not a cure.
The Real Cost of Fewer Foreign Visitors
Tourism is a major export. The WTTC warned earlier this year of a potential $15.7 billion drop in visitor spending and the possible loss of some 157,000 American jobs. Hotels, restaurants, airlines and small tourist towns all feel that. There’s some hope. The Commerce Department still forecasts international visits rising from 68.3 million in 2025 to 70.5 million in 2026, though recovery is expected to take time.
