UK Set to Restrict Visas for Nations with High Asylum Claims

Home Office sources indicate that the UK government will implement stricter immigration rules for nationals coming from countries with high asylum claim rates. The proposed visa framework will impose stronger requirements for work and study visas in Pakistan as well as Nigeria and Sri Lanka. This reform seeks to resolve issues related to legal immigration status entrants who subsequently file asylum claims for permanent stay.

The Home Office plans to publish an Immigration White Paper which will present an extensive framework to recover discipline in our immigration system according to their spokesperson. The government displays significant worry regarding its perception of visa system exploitation. Officials are using data collection to track the behavior patterns of visa holders who eventually request asylum status. Last year saw asylum applications reach their highest level since records began in 1979: Over 108,000 people claimed asylum in the UK Pakistani nationals accounted for 10,542 claims – the highest of any nationality Sri Lankan (2,862) and Nigerian (2,841) nationals also filed significant numbers of claims
Professor Jonathan Portes suggests the policy targets perceived abusive asylum claims instead of overall migration reduction. An immigration white paper releasing the government’s complete action plan will emerge later this month to pursue Prime Minister Starmer’s commitment toward handling both legal and illegal migration.
