REAL ID Deadline Arrives: What Air Travelers Need to Know Now

Beginning Wednesday May 7th 2025 the United States turned on a new requirement for domestic air travel identification documents which applies to all US travelers. Multiple delays have led to the final implementation of the REAL ID compliance deadline.
National airport checkpoints now require stricter identification processes under the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) enforcement policy. Standard driver’s licenses without REAL ID compliance won’t get passengers through airport checkpoints for domestic flights which completes the security recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission twenty years ago.
Many state motor vehicle offices experienced extraordinary crowds from people who wanted to update their identification before the deadline arrived.
What Travelers Should Know
- REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper right corner (typically black or gold depending on the state)
- Acceptable alternatives include valid passports, passport cards, and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses
- Temporary paper cards issued by DMVs will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints
- Processing time for permanent REAL ID cards may take up to three weeks
Travellers using TSA PreCheck will face extended security checks and waiting times despite adhering to identification protocols.
Travelers should verify their identification is valid at least eight weeks in advance of their scheduled departure dates according to the Department of Homeland Security. Federal facilities along with nuclear power plants are included under these requirements for access.
