UAE Prepares For UNGA78 And Climate Ambition Summit – All You Need To Know

UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan will lead the country’s delegation to the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York from September 18 to 26, aiming to highlight the Emirates’ vision of creating a better world for all.

The delegation will participate in a number of high-level meetings and engage with Member States, UN officials and other stakeholders on urgent global challenges, including addressing climate change, countering terrorism and extremism and empowering women and girls.

Led by Sheikh Abdullah, the delegation will also engage in meticulous discussions related to climate action, pandemic prevention and response, universal health coverage, the fight against tuberculosis and the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

Sultan Al Jaber To Lead COP28 Team To Climate Ambition Summit

The UAE minister will present the country’s vision for international peace and cooperation in his September 23 address at UNGA78. Additionally, the Middle Eastern nation and a prominent supporter of sustainability initiatives will also participate in the Climate Ambition Summit.

The UN-convened event on September 20 is expected to serve as a crucial milestone ahead of COP28 in Dubai later in November. Led by COP28 President-Designate Sultan Al Jaber, the team will lead a number of critical events and bilateral meetings.

COP28 UAE will be a milestone moment when the world will take stock of its progress on the 2015 Paris Agreement. The first Global Stocktake (GST) will provide a comprehensive assessment of progress and help align international efforts on climate action.

UN Chief Speaks On Key Persons Opting Out Of UNGA’s Opening Session

With several high-profile world leaders opting out of UNGA’s annual opening session, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently said he cares less about who comes to New York and more about the outcomes, adding: “This is not a Vanity Fair. This is a political body.”

He emphasised the need to revive the lagging Sustainable Development Goals, recalling his $500 billion SDG Stimulus proposal to support developing countries to make sure they have the resources they need to achieve the SDGs.

Stressing the urgency of returning to the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the UN chief said the Climate Ambition Summit will provide an opportunity for the world to step up efforts to reign in runaway climate change.
