Biden
President Joe Biden has spoken out against a recent Supreme Court ruling that grants presidents absolute immunity from prosecution for their core official actions. In a speech from the White House President Joe Biden emphasized that no one including the president, is above the law.
The Supreme Court ruled with a vote of 6-3 that former President Donald Trump could claim immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office. This decision overturns a previous ruling by a federal appeals court and could delay Trump’s trial related to his actions on January 6.
Joe Biden seems unhappy with the court’s ruling. President Biden warned that this ruling sets a dangerous precedent and it is like giving future presidents nearly unchecked power.
In his statement from the White House, Biden highlighted all the potential risks of a second term for Donald Trump. Through his speech, he is trying to build up the narrative that the president’s power should be limited by law in the United States.
The recent decision of the court complicates Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump for election subversion. Now Lower courts need to determine if Trump’s actions to overturn the 2020 election results were official and therefore immune from prosecution. This process could take months, likely delaying any trial until after the next election.
On the other hand, President Biden is showing commitment to protecting democracy and pointed out that the Supreme Court has been undermining established legal principles. He is trying to use it for political benefits as well, he is urging voters to make Trump accountable.
After the ruling legal team of Trump moved to challenge his conviction in a separate New York criminal case. This could possibly delay his sentencing because it is a long procedure and after all a hot case!
Though the President Biden’s speech is gaining momentum where he have highlighted the importance of maintaining legal power.
